Laser-etched patterns that play themselves, and change the closer you get.
Aesthetic Algorithms is an interactive sound and visual installation shown in the
dual exhibit Kinetic Iterations at the Dairy Center for the Arts. A series of
software-generated visuals, laser-etched on paper, draws on Sol LeWitt's approach
to making instructions for art rather than the art itself.
The etched images live in laser-cut boxes. Five of them have motors attached and
are networked to one another, playing synchronized rhythmic patterns that shift
and evolve while keeping a consistent shape. Proximity changes the piece — the
closer you get, the more actively the boxes play.
