Wanderers
A soundwalk where every planet sings as you pass it.
Wanderers is a geo-spatial sound walk app built as a companion to the Colorado Scale Model Solar System (CSMSS) — a series of plaques tracing the solar system at a scale of 1 to 10 billion, running from the Fiske Planetarium out along Colorado Avenue on the CU Boulder campus.
Designed by Teri Rueb (director), Roberto Azaretto (sound design and composition), and myself (audio programming and app design), commissioned by the Fiske Planetarium.
The app runs real-time interactive sound synthesis in Pure Data (Pd). Each planet is sonified from its relative mass and orbital period into its own soundprint, and the mix shifts as you move — orbit rate, hearing range, and heading are all adjustable, and individual planets can be toggled on or off. Sound is spatialized to your location and heading, so headphones are highly recommended.
Live at the Fiske Planetarium since December 2021.
